Vanessa’s success story working as an NDIS Support Worker, for Omnia’s Youth Diversity Team in Albury.
Hi, I’m Vanessa, I’m an NDIS Program Support Worker at Job Centre Australia Albury. I’ve worked in our Youth Diversity team for the past five years.
I grew up with a passion for advocating for those with additional needs. My older brother Benjamin has Down syndrome, and we’ve always been extremely close. I attended all Ben’s medical appointments, and always thought it was fantastic seeing him accomplish so many things in life. At school I had a friend who was deaf, and, based on my experience signing with Ben, I helped teach the other children signs to communicate with her. My love of helping others led to volunteering with children living with disabilities, commencing speech pathology studies, and then my role at JCAL.
My role involves arranging community outings, industry visits, guest speakers, and work experience for our participants. What I love most is seeing our participants grow and achieve their personal goals. It gives me goosebumps when they have a “first experience” such as visiting the Weir or enjoying a meal in a fancy restaurant where you don’t pay until the end!
I believe the essential traits for my role are being patient, caring, and a good listener with a ‘can do’ attitude. My everyday motto is “No harm in asking”.
This year, my plan is to continue being involved in the local community, and to create a positive presence for our participants, such as working with local businesses on a program promoting inclusivity.
I’d love the chance to meet you, so if you’re in Albury, pop into our office any time and say hi!
