Why did you choose to work in Disability Employment Services?

I joined Omnia Inclusive in February 2024. Prior to that, I was a primary school teacher for four years, having completed my Bachelor of Primary Education. About six months before making the career change, I began thinking about life after teaching. While I enjoyed education, I knew there was more I wanted to experience and learn. I spoke with several friends and family members, and because they knew I liked to work with and support people, they suggested I explore the disability sector.

Outside of teaching students with various disabilities and barriers, I had little experience in the disability industry, but I was eager to learn more. After speaking with several people in the Disability Employment Services (DES) industry, I was excited by the opportunities across the board. I could see a future in DES where I could build meaningful relationships and contribute to positive change. One thing that always left me wondering as a teacher was where certain students would end up when they entered the workforce. I’d support and educate them for a year, but once they graduated from primary school, I’d likely never know where they went or what career paths they pursued.

Now, in the DES industry, I feel I can witness far more tangible successes, and I’m proud to have played a role in someone’s journey to meaningful employment. I’m also currently studying a Diploma of Business Operations, which is helping me expand my skill set as I continue to grow in this space.

What do you like about working at Omnia Inclusive?

I think my favourite part about working for Omnia Inclusive is the personal touch we can have with our participants. I’m given the time and opportunity to build meaningful relationships with everyone I support, and I find that very rewarding. I really enjoy the team in South Brisbane, and I believe we all have strengths that complement each other.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job as a Workplace Consultant is seeing a participant thrive in a new job. More often than not, they are hesitant and uneasy with a new job and routine, and they can often struggle at the beginning. Seeing them overcome these challenges, grow in confidence, and excel, is incredibly rewarding. There have also been examples of people gaining promotions and full-time contracts as a result of their hard work and dedication, which, as their Workplace Consultant, is awesome to witness. This newfound confidence in a job often translates into improvements in other areas of their lives. I’ve seen participants improve their financial situation, physical and mental health, and even their relationships with family members.

What is a fun fact about yourself that people may not know?

I spent three years living in a small town of 900 people in country Queensland as a teacher. I have a border collie named Zampa, after the Australian cricketer.
