When Connor joined Omnia Inclusive’s Youth NDIS Services in Orange last July, he was in Year 10 and keen to build skills for the future. He had clear goals – he wanted to feel more confident talking to people and learn how to manage his own money. But, like many young people, he just didn’t know where to start.
Living with autism and managing anxiety, Connor was ready to take on new challenges. With support from his Omnia Inclusive team, he jumped into both the Employment and Independence programs, determined to grow both personally and socially.
Through the Employment program, Connor worked on writing his resume and preparing for interviews. One of his favourite parts was training in the Mini Woolies Omnia training facility, a hands-on learning experience in a simulated environment. There, he practised handling money, helping customers, and building communication skills through role-play alongside other participants – all in a comfortable and supportive environment.
Knowing Connor had a passion for animals, the team set up a work experience placement at Diesel & Blue Doggy Daycare. It was a perfect match. He loved spending time with the dogs and tackling real workplace tasks. The experience boosted his confidence and gave him a real taste of what meaningful work could look like.
As part of the Independence program, Connor learned how to budget, manage his time, and communicate more effectively so he could start advocating for himself. The team also helped him take another big step – signing up for driving lessons through the Birrang driving program, supporting his journey toward independence.
When Connor was ready to look for a job, Omnia Inclusive supported him every step of the way – from helping him apply, to attending the interview with him, liaising with the employer, and guiding him through the onboarding process.
Today, Connor is proudly working full-time at Harris Farm, using the skills he’s worked so hard to build.
Even now, Connor’s journey with Omnia Inclusive isn’t over. The team continues to meet with him weekly, checking in on how things are going at work, getting feedback from his employer, and helping him fine-tune important life skills – like managing his money and navigating emotions in the workplace.
