Why did you choose to work in Disability Employment Services?

I responded to an Omnia Inclusive job advert for someone to work with the McDonald’s program, assisting candidates into work with McDonald’s. As my first job was with McDonald’s, I thought this could be a great opportunity. I have worked in hospitality and TAFE teaching for many years, so it was a chance to bring these skills to use in making a difference within the community. I also have experience in TAFE and hospitality working with people with various disabilities, so I knew what an asset they could be to employers, given the opportunity and support.

What do you like about working at Omnia Inclusive?

The team I work with makes the job satisfying because, as a team, we all pitch in to assist people with disabilities into roles. Omnia Inclusive offers workplace support, which I love, as it helps both the employee and the employer. Seeing employers embrace the opportunity to develop new skills or help their staff develop is another gratifying aspect. Observing our candidates’ progress is also another benefit of my role.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I love getting feedback from employers, candidates, their families, and the general public who see what we do as customers in workplaces. I also take pride in the tenure of employment our candidates achieve. I’ve been with Omnia Inclusive for 13 years, and some placements from my first year are still in roles, while others have progressed along their pathway into new and varied roles. I have actually had past candidates employ some of our current candidates when in new roles of responsibility.

What is a fun fact about yourself that people may not know?

I opened a café in Melbourne years ago, and we got a write-up in the newspaper. They also took a photo of us for the story. The photographer forgot to get our names, so they rang up afterwards, and a staff member took the call. She yelled out to ask, “What’s your surname?” I had my back to her as I was making coffees and didn’t realise she was on the phone, so as a joke, I said “Florentino.” It ended up being printed in the newspaper as “Ash Florentino.” Needless to say, I had many relatives and friends ringing to query why the name change.
